We’re dog mama Marguerite and Maltipoo puppy Billy. We relocated to Panama from France in early July 2025 and have since been on a quest to make this beautiful tropical country our new home. We’ve had many (mis)adventures along the way.
When Billy ate rat poison on a Thursday evening, we were scrambling to find an emergency vet in Panama City. Fortunately, we were able to take him to a great pet hospital. But in the aftermath of the horror we experienced, it hit me: it is SO difficult to find the right resources for your pet in Panama, especially in English. Especially when you need them the most.

Yes, Panama is quite pet-friendly. You’ll find that many Panamanians love animals, and pets are welcome in a variety of settings. Dogs are commonly seen in parks, on the beach, and even in some cafes. That said, always check individual rules for housing complexes, condos, or rentals, since pet policies can vary.
Yes! Panama has a number of outdoor spaces where pets can enjoy fresh air and exercise. From city parks like Omar or Paitilla to long stretches of beach on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, there’s no shortage of spots to explore. Just be mindful of the heat and always carry water for your pet
You’ll find a growing number of veterinarians in Panama, especially in Panama City and larger towns like David, Coronado, and Boquete. Many vets speak English and are familiar with international pet care standards. Routine services like vaccinations, check-ups, and preventive treatments are generally slightly more affordable than in North America or Europe.
Many expats bring their dogs and cats to Panama. You’ll need to follow the government’s importation process, which usually involves a health certificate from your vet, proof of rabies vaccination, and an import permit. The process can feel overwhelming at first, but with the right paperwork and planning, it’s very doable. I did it
The biggest considerations are the tropical climate and import paperwork. Dogs and cats can struggle with the heat and humidity, so it’s important to schedule walks early or late in the day and provide shade and water. If you’re renting or buying property, always confirm the pet policy, as some condos have restrictions on size or breed.
