When my puppy, Billy, ate rat poison, I panicked. I found myself googling “emergency vet in Panama City” to no avail. In Panama, websites aren’t as common as in North America or Europe, so expats can sometimes struggle to find the right information. NOT what you want to deal with when you have a pet emergency!
Fortunately, my vet was able to refer me to CADIV, a 24-hour animal hospital. This is where Billy was treated. Shoutout to CADIV – their incredible staff saved my little boy’s life.
Is there an emergency vet in Panama City who speaks English?
Yes, you will be able to find an emergency vet in Panama City who speaks English. Not only do the doctors at CADIV speak English, but so does their night-time intake nurse. If your Spanish isn’t quite there yet, it’s very reassuring to be able to communicate in your own language!
While not an emergency 24 clinic, it is worth mentioning that Billy’s regular vets also speak English. We go to:
Dra Ariadna Clínica Veterinaria, PH Marina Plaza, Vía Israel, Panamá.
The staff and vets are lovely people. It’s easy to see that they care about the animals they treat.

How much does it cost to visit an emergency vet in Panama City?
The cost for an emergency visit to the vet can vary, but to give an idea, I paid close to 300 USD, which included the initial consultation, a good 5 blood tests, charcoal, a poison antidote, intravenous and overnight hospitalisation for my puppy. I believe their after-hour fees are very fair and reasonable. The following days in-hospital, I paid around 100 USD per day, which covered his stay, IV, meds and blood tests. It is worth noting that, thank goodness, my dog didn’t have any complications. Each procedure would have then been billed separately. I believe that any price is worth paying to save our babies, though, so I was more than happy to take out my bank card.
How to be prepared for an emergency?
While no one wants to have a pet emergency, especially after hours, a little bit of preparation can go a long way in saving your animal’s life. I’ve saved the 24 hour clinics mentioned here to my Google Maps, so calling those precious numbers is literally just a tap away. While I hope I never need an emergency vet in Panama City again, I’m conscious it can’t hurt to know exactly where to go!
